Enjoying ideal playing conditions Shoreham entertained a large travelling Midhurst squad. With near equal numbers both clubs formed two teams each to contest a range of training games which were designed to emphasise speed and finding and using space.
With all players fully warmed up they were as anxious as the supporters to tuck into the main course of four full contact games. Although there appeared initially to be little to separate any of the sides as each of the games wore on it was Shoreham who edged ahead to take the victories. Playing games of a longer duration than those at festivals enables the coaches to better assess a teams strengths and weaknesses. We have always been a strong tackling side now, with the arrival of contesting the breakdown, our commitment to protect our own possession or turnover the oppositions has been brought to the fore. The lessons we can learn from some of the excellent Midhurst play is that by moving the ball wide through the air with well timed passing is a skill that we will have to hone in the coming weeks.
