On a beautiful and sunny day at Buckingham Park, Shoreham played host to their big rivals from last years’ league - Haywards Heath.
The game started exactly as planned with Shoreham's props powering through and dismantling the Heath scrum, however Haywards Heath then grabbed an intercept against the run of play.
Shoreham picked themselves back up from under their own sticks and got back to task, scoring two tries of their own with an interception in kind.
As the half went on and despite clearly being the superior team Shoreham allowed Haywards Heath a foothold in the game, who in fairness were fast and strong to the breakdown which allowed them to gain the upper hand at times. Half time ended 20-14 to Shoreham.
In the second half, Haywards Heath gained confidence after a few broken tackles and asserting themselves through a strong kicking game. Despite a hugely dominant scrum and a lineout that sharpened up as the game went on, Shoreham lacked the accuracy needed to get back in the game.
Despite scoring an ultimately consolatory try, Shoreham were their own worst enemies in the second half, making costly errors that were punished by a solid Haywards Heath outfit. The game finished 27-49 to the visitors.
Player of the match went to Daryn Clarke for his excellent work in the scrums absolutely bulldozing the opposition around the park.
The Mighty Ham remain in a strong position in the league following last years’ promotion and will look to grow into the second half of the season. Their next fixture is away to Seaford RFC on the 26th November.
